Bad Day Anticipation

Things don’t always go as we planned. Some can go right, others can go wrong.

Sometimes we will have unavoidable, monstrous, and miserable day. We have to face it. Make the best of it.

Making your bed every morning is one of the thing you could do. In case you have a miserable day, you will come to a bed that is made – by you. When you have a miserable day, you will feel a little happy to see a clean room.

It will give you hope, that tomorrow will be better. Cleaning your desk before leaving will also help. Exercise a lifestyle as close as a minimalist would.

Sometimes, I think my life will be much simpler if I only have 2 bags. One for clothes and one for my technological gears. No cupboard, no desk, no clutter. Spaces is better than clutters. But, I think that will not be possible for now.

Exercise, a little jogging or running will make your body producing dopamine. That is a chemical that stimulus our happiness. It will also keep you healthy.

Travels. Make a little walk around. See the world. See what people do. Collect experiences. Collect memories. Don’t collect things.

Share. Teach what kind of knowledge you have. Donate some of your changes to charity. Volunteer to those who need.

When a bad day happen, do things above. It will make you a little bit happier.


There are two keys to happiness, one is being grateful with your life, the other is being content with what you have.

Grateful is really a powerful word. There are a lot of ways to being grateful. You have a little bread for breakfast? You are richer than most of the kids in Africa. You have a roof above your head? You are better than many homeless people in your city. You have a job you don’t like? There are fresh graduates out there who can not get a single job.

Every time God is calling us, five times a day, the muadzin will say “hayya ala shalah” and then “hayya ala al-falaah”. Pray, show your gratefulness to God, then you will be happy. Be grateful, and you will find happiness.

Feels miserable? Write ten things that made you grateful today. Write it on gratefulness journal. Every. Single. Day. By the end of the month, you will find 300 things that made you happy. By the end of the year, you will find 3650. If you can’t find any, see what you wrote days before.

The second key is content with what you have. It is an extension for gratefulness. You feel that all you have is good for you. You don’t feel like to buy things you don’t really need. You share what you have to the others. You don’t care about what people say about you. You feel passionate about what you are doing.

Not caring about what people say about you is one of the key of being content. They said your job is barely make living? They don’t do your job, they don’t know. They said you are not beautiful, you are ugly? Well, we can’t change our face, so, why bother. They said your house is not big enough for your family? They don’t know that you have worked hard and that is the best house you can afford.

You are the key of your happiness. Don’t outsource your happiness to others. Be grateful and content with your life.

Mesin Waktu

Telah dibuktikan secara ilmiah bahwa kembali ke masa lalu adalah hal yang mustahil, sehingga mesin waktu untuk kembali ke sana tidak akan ada. Sedangkan untuk ke masa depan, secara teoritis mungkin dengan teori relativitas khusus, itu pun hanya searah dan hingga kini belum ada tumpangan yang mendekati kecepatan cahaya. Itu secara fisik.

Tetapi secara pikiran kita seringkali menunggang mesin waktu. Menyesal dengan apa yang kita perbuat di masa lalu. Menyesal dengan apa yang tidak kita perbuat di masa lalu. Bertanya-tanya dengan bagaimana jika. Bertanya-tanya tentang benar tidaknya keputusan yang kita ambil.

Rasa bersalah dan penyesalan adalah tunggangan pikiran kita ke masa lalu. Seringkali membebani, membuat langkah ke depan terasa berat.

Sebaliknya, pikiran kita pun sering melanglang buana ke masa depan. Besok mau makan apa? Kapan lulus? Kapan nikah? Kapan punya anak? Bisakah disertasi ini selesai? Khawatir, khawatir, dan khawatir. Parahnya kekhawatiran ini seringkali diperparah dengan tekanan tekanan dari keluarga dan sanak kerabat. Menambah berat langkah ke depan.

Kegundahan dan kekhawatiran adalah tunggangan pikiran kita ke masa depan. Padahal, apa pun yang kita lakukan, kita tak pernah tahu apa yang terjadi di masa depan. Yang bisa kita lakukan adalah melakukan apa yang terbaik untuk saat ini.

Guilt and regret are the results of our mind time travelling into the past, worry and anxiety are the results of our mind time travelling to the future.

Tapi, adakah perjalanan waktu yang menyenangkan? Tentu. Kenangan adalah oleh-oleh pikiran kita dari masa lalu. Ingatkah pada masa di mana kita bermain sepakbola di lapangan badminton di ujung gang? Pada masa saat melompat pagar membolos hingga hafal lubang-lubang yang tak terjaga di sekolah? Pada masa belajar dan bermain bersama saat kuliah, tanpa memikirkan apa yang terjadi besok?

Dari masa depan, cita-cita adalah oleh-oleh pikiran kita di masa depan. Seringkali saya membayangkan, mimpi-mimpi yang sederhana, sekedar bermain ombak air laut di tepi pantai yang damai, atau duduk di depan rumah menyambut sore bersama orang-orang tercinta. Atau mimpi-mimpi yang sedikit rumit seperti menjadi dokter, arsitek, insinyur, pilot, atau mungkin pelukis. Cita-cita yang kalau pun tak terwujud, kita juga tak terlalu peduli.

Kenangan adalah oleh-oleh indah perjalanan waktu ke masa lalu, dan cita-cita adalah oleh-oleh indah perjalanan waktu ke masa depan.

Pada akhirnya, masa lalu dan masa depan bukanlah sesuatu yang harus disesali. Bukan sesuatu yang harus membuat kita merasa bersalah. Bukan sesuatu yang harus membuat kita khawatir. Bukan sesuatu yang harus membuat kita gundah gulana. Ambillah kenangan-kenangan indah di masa lalu, dan cita-citakan sesuatu yang indah di masa depan.

Ada sebuah kutipan, yang seringkali diatributkan ke Umar bin Khattab, walaupun tidak ada sumber yang jelas, tetapi isinya luar biasa.

No amount of guilt can change the past and no amount of worrying can change the future.

Kerjakan apa yang kita bisa kerjakan hari ini. Hiduplah di saat ini, menumpuk batu bata yang akan membangun masa depan. Mengubur penyesalan yang sudah menjadi fondasi untuk kita hidup hari ini.

Make Your Bed!

Every morning in SEAL training, my instructors who were all Vietnam veterans would show up in my barracks room and the first thing they’d do was inspect my bed.

If you did it right, the corners will be squared, the covers will be pulled tight, the pillow centered just under the headboard, and the extra blanket folded neatly at the foot of the rack.

It was a simple task, mundane at best, but every morning we were required to make our bed to perfection.

It seemed a little ridiculuous at the time, particularly in light of the fact that we were aspiring to be a real warriors – tough, battle-hardened, SEALs.

But the wisdom of this simple act has been proven to me many times over.

If you make your bed every morning, you will have accomplished the first task of the day.

It will give you a small sense of pride, and will encourage you to do another task, and another, and another.

And by the end of the day that one task completed will turn into many tasks completed.

Making your bed will also reinforce the fact, that little things in life matter.

If you can’t do the little things right, you will never be able to do the big things right.

And if by chance you have a miserable day, you will come home to a bed that is made, that you made.

And a made bed gives you encouragement that tomorrow will be better.

So if you want to change the world, start off by making your bed.
